German Shepherd Dog: The Loyal One
Oh the iconic German Shepherd rescue dogs victoria
. Rin Tin Tin was what made this breed so well known throughout the world, becoming the first canine movie star. It is one of my favourite breeds, and I am pretty sure Rundle’s mom is part German Shepherd so he would technically be too, which makes a lot of sense with his personality.
They are possibly one of the most versatile canine working dogs in the world, doing jobs from herding livestock, military and police dogs, as guide dogs and even avalanche rescue dogs. They are working dogs who are extremely intelligent and love having a task to do. They will usually pick up on things pretty quick and love to learn.
They can range anywhere from 74-95 pounds and live to be 10 to 14 years old. They can be very protective and are known to be a guard dog. They shouldn’t be left outside or chained up all day because they see the home and the people in it as theirs. That being said not every German Shepherd will be like this, this is just general tendencies of the breed. I personally know a dog who hangs outside all day (not chained) and she just greets everyone who comes to pet her on the street. She is super friendly, but was brought up to be this way.

needs a lot of activity, both physically and mentally. They are not a good dog to be kept inside all day! So if you are looking at this breed you need to be very active. If not they will start to exhibit frustration in the form of barking and chewing.
Whenever I think of a German Shepherd I think of them as a regal dog, they are proud, loyal and distinguished. In the past they have been one of the breeds misrepresented as aggressive, but this is often not the case if they are socialized at a young age. Making sure they are introduced to many people, items and situations can make them more comfortable with them.
Their coat comes in three different types and they can come in vary degrees of colours and markings. Their coat types are plush, short and long, and colours can range anywhere from brown, tan, white and black. They can even be pure white!
They are one of the breeds very prone to hip dysplasia. It basically means that their hips are misaligned, which can cause pain when they walk or run. Studies have found that this can occur at a very young age and develop when dogs are in their growing stage. Making sure they are not running too long or jumping too much while they are growing can help prevent this from happening. This can be very difficult to prevent in a breed that wants to be very active. So if you are active with a puppy keep playing to shorter time periods so they have time to rest and recover and don't go too strenuous.
If you are thinking of getting a German Shepherd dog next do your homework and make sure you have the time to care for this dog. Like I said they are active and need mental stimulation. But you are sure to have a very loyal companion who will be your friend for life.
