Housetraining Rescue Dogs BC - Some Quick Tips

July 17, 2018

Put your puppy on a regular feeding schedule. Keeping a puppy regular is about keeping their timing regular too. If you feed them at a consistent time, then it will make it easier for you to predict when they’ll need to go out. For example, I feed Indy in the morning after he goes outside to pee and poo. He comes in, slams some water and I give him his bowl to eat which takes two seconds to finish.

Pick up your puppy's water dish about two and a half hours before bedtime to reduce the likelihood that they'll need to relieve themselves during the night. This helped me a lot when he was a puppy and couldn’t hold his bladder for any length of time haha.

Here’s how the Humane Society says to handle mistakes.

Expect your puppy to pee an poo in the house by accident—it's a normal part of housetraining, everyone goes through it, just DON’T get angry at your rescue dogs bc. Here's what to do when that happens:

Interrupt your puppy when you catch them in the act, but let them finish obviously. Make eye contact and make sure your rescue dogs bc sees your face, take sunglasses off.

Make a sound like a big clap and say OUTSIDE. Lead them outside and if they finish there, or haven’t even started and they do end up going there then give them a treat and some praise for being such a good rescue dogs bc and peeing where it is appropriate. They will know they did good and made you happy by peeing outside.

Don't punish your puppy for eliminating in the house. If you find a soiled area, it's too late to administer a correction. Just clean it up. Rubbing your puppy's nose in it, taking them to the spot and scolding them or any other punishment will only make them afraid of you or afraid to eliminate in your presence. Punishment will often do more harm than good.

Clean the soiled area thoroughly. Puppies are highly motivated to continue soiling in areas that smell like urine or feces. Find tips for cleaning up after your pet here. And check out our dog apparel Canada here.

It's extremely important that you use these supervision and confinement procedures to minimize the number of accidents. If you allow your puppy to eliminate frequently in the house, they'll get confused about where they’re supposed to go, which will prolong the housetraining process.

Plan in case you’re away

If you are away from home for more than four or five hours a day, you won’t be able to supervise your little friend. If you are leaving for holidays, try to find someone who can look after them for you. Remember to make plans well in advance!
