Labrador Retriever: The Most Popular Breed in Canada
The Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed of rescue dogs victoria
in Canada. And note this article might be a bit biased as to whether you should get one as I have had 3 Labrador Retriever mixes and I can’t say enough about them.
First I had Chester who was a Chesapeake Bay Retriever/ Chocolate Lab mix and Zephyr and Rundle are both Black Lab mixes. Chester was huge at around 90 pounds and Zephyr and Rundle are both on the smaller side. Labrador Retrievers can weight anywhere between 55 to 80 lbs and LOVE food so if left unchecked they have the tendency to be overweight.
So they are a medium to large size dog that has a life expectancy of around 10 - 12 years. Which is a lot in dog years!
The origin of the Labrador Retriever is from Newfoundland! Woo! They were originally bred to help local fishermen as they would catch fish that had escaped the hooks and tow-in lines. They were also great companions and would spend their evenings at home with their families. This means they are a dog that was bred to be a sports dog, they do need a lot of exercise. If you are very active they can be a great companion, but they are not ones to sit at home all day. That being said there is always variation between rescue dogs bc
and personality and not one is the same.
On another note they will definitely need training as they are keen to learn. They can be rowdy so they need to learn commands so that they don’t get too boisterous. They are very intelligent dogs and can pick up on things quickly. They also have a keen sense of smell and are often used as police dogs and scent detection dogs. So keep your treats well hidden as they will surely sniff them out and find them! They are also the most widely used as assistance and service dogs.
All in all Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in Canada, US and the UK because of their good natured personality. They are goofy and loveable and if given the right amount of time and stimulus they can make a great companion. They tend to be very gentle and are extremely loyal to their owners. They have a reputation of being great with kids as they love their youthful energy.
There are many cases where people adopting Labrador Retrievers do not know what they are getting themselves in to. They tend to be a breed that often gets put up for adoption because of a lack of research. So if you are looking at getting a Labrador, please remember that they do need activity, physically and mentally, to be happy. A happy and tired dog saves a lot of headache and stress.
